Abstract - Art that uses colors, shapes, forms, and textures to refer to something in reality.
Non-Representational - Art that is not intended to to represent a physical object or reference in reality. Can't be recognized at all in reality.
While both use the same technique of colors, shapes, textures, and light, abstract art refers to something in reality while non-representation does not..
After watching "Joan Jonas: Drawings", I realized that artwork doesn't need to be realistic or really recognizable at all to get the attention of others. I really found it odd at first as to why she was drawing really fast and sort of messy to the point that I wouldn't be able to tell what it was without the video showing what it was. It looked as though that she was just trying to draw the basic shape of the object. Instead of drawing them neatly, it looked liked she kind of just scribbled them down. Overall, it boggles my mind to see how such great artwork can be forged from what looks like unrepresentable art.
